A deadly train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and management of the country's major public works projects.
The crash took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a route built to link the Atlantic and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to provide an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.
“We will meticulously determine what caused this tragedy,” stated the country's president.
The president reported that, of the some 250 people on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in grave condition. The leader added plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those affected.
Flagship Project of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the immediate past president, whose time in office ended the previous year. This rail line was closely associated with his leadership's developmental goals for the southeastern region.
Another massive train initiative from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to revitalize the economy of a comparatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions
The development of both rail lines was overseen by the nation's military, marking a significant increase of its responsibilities in national infrastructure. They were executed at an accelerated speed, beating predictions to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that presidency.
However, this fast-paced schedule had simultaneously raised ongoing apprehensions over operational security.
- Sunday's crash was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This involves an previous crash this month when a train hit a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had a couple of non-deadly derailments.
Appeals for Audit and Pause
In the wake of the tragedy, the leader of a key rival party urged an urgent suspension in the building and running of all similar projects.
This halt was proposed while awaiting a full technical review. The party stated that the loss of life "demands swift accountability."
In reply, the president asserted that the train had been functioning in total adherence to all safety requirements. Assurances were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the construction and operation of these national initiatives.
